Mice and rats are among the most common — and most damaging — pests in Sydney homes and businesses, gnawing through wiring and insulation, contaminating food, and breeding rapidly once they find a way in. Stark Pest Solutions provides thorough inspection, baiting and exclusion services to remove existing rodents and keep them from coming back.
Whether you’re dealing with house mice in the kitchen, black rats in the roof void, or brown rats around the yard, our technicians identify the species and tailor treatment to match, backed by long-term prevention advice.
The three rodents Sydney properties most commonly deal with are the house mouse (Mus musculus), the black rat or roof rat (Rattus rattus), and the brown rat or Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus). Each behaves differently — house mice are curious and nest in wall cavities and cabinets, black rats are excellent climbers that favour roof voids and trees, while brown rats are burrowers found at ground level, in subfloors and around sewers.
Correct identification matters because it determines where we focus inspection, which entry points need sealing, and the type of bait or trap placement that will actually work — a treatment aimed at ground-dwelling brown rats won’t necessarily catch a black rat living in your roof.
Droppings are usually the first sign homeowners notice — mouse droppings are small with pointed ends, while rat droppings are larger with blunt ends. Other tell-tale signs include gnaw marks on wood, wiring and plastic, and dark grease or rub marks along skirting boards and frequently used runways.
Nesting material such as shredded paper, fabric and insulation tucked into wall cavities or roof voids is another strong indicator, and chewed electrical wiring is a particularly serious sign since it creates a genuine fire risk and should be treated as an urgent priority, not just a nuisance.
We start with a full property inspection, checking roof voids, subfloors, wall cavities and the building’s exterior for entry points, droppings, gnaw marks and active runways. This tells us which species we’re dealing with and how established the infestation is before we recommend a treatment plan.
From there we combine baiting and trapping suited to the species and location with sealing of identified entry points, since removing existing rodents without closing off access simply invites the next ones in. We also advise on sanitation changes that remove the food and shelter drawing rodents to the property in the first place.
Treatment methods are matched to the site and severity of the problem. Tamper-resistant bait stations are used around the exterior and in roof voids or subfloors, while snap traps or non-toxic glue-free traps are placed in specific indoor locations where activity has been confirmed.
For established infestations like the one shown here, where rodents have been nesting undisturbed in a roof void for some time, treatment is combined with a clean-up of contaminated insulation and nesting material, since droppings and urine left behind can pose an ongoing health risk even after the rodents themselves are gone.
Sealing gaps is the single most effective long-term prevention step — mice can squeeze through gaps as small as 5mm, while rats need only 20mm, so check around pipes, vents, rooflines and gaps under doors regularly. Steel wool and caulk are far more effective than foam, which rodents can chew straight through.
Beyond exclusion, store food in airtight containers, clean up spills and pet food promptly, keep bins secured, and eliminate standing water and clutter in yards and garages. Regular inspection is still the best defence — catching a small population early is always easier than dealing with an established infestation.
How do I know if I have mice or rats?
Droppings are the easiest way to tell them apart — mouse droppings are small (3-8mm) with pointed ends, while rat droppings are much larger (12-20mm) with blunt, rounded ends. Rats also leave larger gnaw marks and gaps, and their runways and grease marks tend to be more pronounced.
Is it safe to have bait stations if I have pets or kids?
Yes, when installed correctly. We use tamper-resistant, lockable bait stations positioned away from areas pets and children can access, and can discuss trap-only options if you’d prefer to avoid poison bait altogether.
How quickly can rodents be removed from my property?
Most infestations show a noticeable reduction in activity within one to two weeks of treatment, though fully clearing an established population and sealing all entry points can take a few visits, particularly for larger properties or serious roof void infestations.
Can rodents cause damage even if I don’t see them?
Yes. Mice and rats gnaw on wiring, insulation and structural timber even when they’re rarely seen, so unexplained electrical faults, chewed items or scratching noises in the roof or walls are worth investigating even without a visible sighting.
Using traps, baiting systems, and preventative measures, our rodent extermination services eliminate infestations effectively while improving long-term protection.

Thank goodness I found Patrick through my local Drummoyne/Five Dock pages. Respectful, quick communication via text, very well priced, on time - not creepy. Unlike my previous pest controller who doesn’t show up, Patrick made contact with me the same day, and completed the job promptly within 48 hours. He even emptied my planter pots that were full of water from the heavy rain attracting mosquitoes, and he sprayed 3 wasp nests from my neighbours windows which share a boundary with our property. He also inspected my roof cavity for possum activity and found an old birds nest which he cleared. Have already recommended to two of my friends. See you again in the new year.
